Central Zoo, managed by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) since 1995, is Nepal's only accredited zoo, situated in the historic Jawalakhel area of Patan in the Kathmandu Valley. Spread across 6 hectares, it is home to 942 individual animals representing 127 species of mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles, as well as a well-stocked aquarium featuring subtropical fish. The zoo attracts over one million visitors each year and serves as a leading center for ex-situ wildlife conservation, research, and environmental education, operating wildlife rescue and rehabilitation programs and engaging schools across the Kathmandu Valley through its Friends of Zoo membership program. Visitors can also enjoy paddleboats, picnic areas, and a children's playground.
