The UNESCO Al Reem Biosphere Reserve is a vast protected natural area covering approximately 120,000 hectares of semi-arid desert landscape in northwestern Qatar, near Ash-Shahaniyah. Designated by UNESCO in 2007, it represents one of the most significant conservation areas in the Arabian Peninsula, encompassing diverse habitats including gravel plains, rocky hills, sabkhas, mud flats, and coastal areas. The reserve is home to iconic desert wildlife such as the Arabian Oryx and gazelles, which have been successfully reintroduced through captive breeding programs, as well as desert foxes, migratory birds, and sea turtles that nest on its shores.
