Westchester Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a community-centered wildlife sanctuary located in Chesterton, Indiana, dedicated to the restoration, conservation, and education of migratory and resident bird species. Established in 2001 and supported by the Porterco Conservation Trust, the sanctuary has transformed a former wetland and garbage dump into a thriving habitat for migratory shorebirds, native flora, bees, and butterflies through careful restoration and reforestation. Volunteers and visitors are welcomed every Saturday morning for community habitat maintenance days, making it both an ecological refuge and a gathering place for nature enthusiasts. The sanctuary creates managed pond environments with appropriate food sources and native plantings to support wildlife during migration and year-round residence. Through its educational outreach, the sanctuary has engaged hundreds of children and coordinated numerous volunteers, nurturing environmental stewardship in the greater Chesterton community.
