Edith G. Read Natural Park and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 179-acre nature sanctuary located in Rye, New York, in Westchester County, established in 1985 along the shoreline of Long Island Sound. The sanctuary encompasses diverse habitats including an 85-acre freshwater lake, salt-marsh wetlands, wooded areas, and beachfront, creating rich environments for a wide variety of wildlife. Birding is a highlight, with the sanctuary recognized by the National Audubon Society of New York as an Important Bird Area; visitors can spot loons, grebes, long-tailed ducks, red-breasted mergansers, eastern screech owls, red-shouldered hawks, osprey, and in winter, flocks of more than 5,000 ducks on the lake. Wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, and swans are also regularly observed. The sanctuary offers walking trails and quiet natural experiences, serving as a beloved refuge for nature lovers and wildlife watchers in the New York metropolitan area.
