Ecological Refuge YACYRETA is a wildlife sanctuary established in 1994 near the Yacyreta Hydroelectric Dam on the Parana River in Ayolas, in Paraguay's Misiones department. Created as an environmental compensation measure for wildlife displaced by the dam's construction, the refuge preserves a rich array of native species across its marshy grasslands, wetlands, and riverside habitats. Visitors can encounter capybaras, howler monkeys, ocelots, and over 250 bird species, including the endangered yellow cardinal, Pinnated Bittern, and Black-masked Finch. The Yacyreta Binational Entity operates environmental education programs and guided tours that highlight the reserve's biodiversity and ongoing conservation efforts, making it an inspiring destination for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and eco-tourism visitors exploring southern Paraguay.
