Appalachian Rivers Aquarium

The Appalachian Rivers Aquarium is a freshwater-focused attraction located in Bryson City, North Carolina, in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. The facility features over 4,000 gallons of water housing more than 15 native fish species, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, brown trout, tiger trout, yellow perch, catfish, and a variety of darters and small stream fish rarely seen on public display. A standout feature is the aquarium's Eastern Hellbender exhibit, which contains two of these state-endangered giant salamanders in the largest display tank in the southeastern United States. Terrariums showcase frogs, turtles, and additional salamander species, while hands-on touch tanks let visitors handle crayfish, frogs, and salamanders, offering an intimate look at the remarkable biodiversity of Appalachian river ecosystems.
