The Australian Wildlife Sanctuary in Bargo, New South Wales, is a heritage-listed, 90-hectare wildlife refuge and charity situated on Tharawal Country within the Wollondilly Shire, south of Sydney. Founded in 1962 by conservationist Dr Thistle Stead AM, the sanctuary is home to rescued, non-releasable, and threatened native species including kangaroos, koalas, emus, wombats, snakes, lizards, wallabies, and a wide variety of native birds. Visitors can participate in Wild Encounters to meet and feed resident animals such as bare-nosed wombats, long-neck turtles, and emus, and can also join nocturnal sanctuary tours to discover pythons, possums, potoroos, gliders, and more after dark. Educational programs, wildlife experiences, and special events make the sanctuary a meaningful and memorable destination for families and conservation supporters.
