Dinokeng Game Reserve is Gauteng's only Big 5 game reserve, and the first free-roaming Big Five reserve adjacent to a major urban area in South Africa. Covering approximately 21,000 hectares of varied bushveld north of Pretoria in the City of Tshwane, Dinokeng — meaning "a place of rivers" in Tswana and Bapedi — is home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros, alongside cheetah, giraffe, hippo, zebra, rare brown hyena, tsessebe, wildebeest, and over 300 recorded species of birds. Visitors can enjoy early morning, mid-morning, and late afternoon guided game drives in open vehicles, as well as armed bush walking safaris. The reserve is malaria-free, just 40 minutes from Pretoria and 75 minutes from OR Tambo International Airport, with more than 30 accommodation options ranging from bush lodges to luxury tented camps.
