The Hartbeespoort Fresh Water Fish Aquarium is a unique and historic attraction located on the R511 near the scenic Hartbeespoort Dam in South Africa's North West Province. Established over four decades ago, it is the only freshwater aquarium in South Africa and is dedicated to promoting conservation through education of indigenous freshwater fish species of Southern Africa. Visitors can explore tanks featuring a diverse range of indigenous and tropical freshwater fish, as well as Nile crocodiles, slender-snouted crocodiles, monitor lizards, tortoises, turtles, pelicans, seals, and penguins. Entry to the aquarium also includes complimentary access to the adjacent Bird Garden, making it a wonderfully varied outing suitable for families, school groups, and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
