Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is a compact urban wildlife sanctuary located on the shores of Lake Victoria within Kisumu city in western Kenya. Gazetted in 1992 to protect a threatened local population of impalas, the sanctuary covers less than one square kilometer but supports a surprisingly diverse array of wildlife. Visitors can encounter impalas, the rare sitatunga antelope, lions, African leopards, cape buffalos, cheetahs, olive baboons, side-striped jackals, hyenas, monitor lizards, leopard tortoises, rescued grey parrots, and over 115 bird species. The sanctuary is particularly notable as a refuge for hippopotamus and provides important open grazing grounds along the lake margins. Managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service, Kisumu Impala Sanctuary offers nature walks, wildlife viewing, camping, and birdwatching, making it an accessible and educational wildlife destination for residents and visitors to western Kenya.
