North American Bear Center

The North American Bear Center is a one-of-a-kind wildlife education facility located one mile west of Ely, Minnesota, founded by renowned bear researcher Dr. Lynn Rogers to educate the public about American black bears and dispel common myths. The center is home to three resident bears named Tasha, Lucky, and Holly, who roam a 2.5-acre natural forested habitat complete with denning areas, a pond, and waterfall. Inside, visitors explore over 50 video exhibits covering bear behavior, hibernation, cub development, vocalizations, and more, alongside a hands-on Cub Room designed for children featuring a walk-through bear den, nature library, and interactive games. A theater screens the full-length BBC documentary Bearwalker of the Northwoods, and interpretive nature trails provide further outdoor learning opportunities. As the only facility of its kind dedicated exclusively to black bear education, the North American Bear Center offers a uniquely immersive and inspiring experience for families and wildlife enthusiasts near the Boundary Waters of Minnesota.
