Reserva Natural do Cavalo do Sorraia

Reserva Natural do Cavalo do Sorraia is a 36-hectare nature reserve located in Alpiarça, in the Santarém district of Portugal, dedicated to the conservation of the Sorraia horse — one of the oldest and rarest native Portuguese horse breeds. With fewer than 200 Sorraia horses believed to exist worldwide, the reserve plays a vital role in protecting this endangered genetic heritage, all of which descends from a small founding group saved by Dr. Ruy d'Andrade in the early 20th century. The reserve features open pasturelands where the horses roam freely, as well as lakes attracting water birds, woodland areas, a garden centre, and falconry displays. Guided visits, interpretive walks, and environmental awareness activities allow visitors to learn about this exceptional breed and its ecological significance, with free entry making it an accessible excursion for all.
