Rukinga Wildlife Sanctuary is an 80,000-acre wildlife haven in Taita Taveta County, Kenya, forming a vital migratory corridor between Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks. Part of the broader Tsavo Conservancy, the sanctuary is home to more than 50 species of large mammals — including elephants, lions, cheetahs, Grevy's zebra, and African wild dogs — as well as over 300 bird species. Established with strong community partnerships, the sanctuary employs local residents as wilderness guardians who conduct anti-poaching patrols and remove snares, while conservation initiatives focus on habitat restoration, reducing human-wildlife conflict, and generating sustainable income for surrounding communities through wildlife-based employment and carbon credit programs.
