South Lakes Safari Zoo

South Lakes Safari Zoo was a well-regarded 51-acre safari zoo established in 1994 near Ulverston, Cumbria, on the edge of the Lake District. The park was home to an impressive range of species including rhinos, lions, tigers, hippos, wolves, snow leopards, giant otters, primates, and penguins. A particularly popular feature was the free-roaming lemur walk, where eight species of lemur wandered the grounds alongside deer, emus, kangaroos, and wallabies. The zoo was renowned for its conservation credentials, successfully breeding endangered Sumatran tigers and white rhinos, and supporting multiple wildlife charities. Daily keeper talks and interactive feeds made it a highly engaging destination for families and wildlife enthusiasts. The zoo permanently closed in December 2024 and its animals were subsequently rehomed.
