Tiger Canyon Private Game Reserve is a pioneering conservation project and wildlife sanctuary set on 6,000 hectares of Karoo landscape near Philippolis in South Africa's Free State province. Established by conservationist John Varty in 2000 with the aim of rewilding captive-born Bengal tigers, Tiger Canyon has grown over more than two decades into home to multiple generations of self-sustaining, wild-born tigers — the only wild population of tigers outside Asia. Alongside tigers, the reserve supports a broader ecosystem of African wildlife within its varied terrain on the banks of the Vanderkloof Dam. The facility operates as a welfare-led initiative focused on providing captive-born big cats with space, agency, and lifelong care in a managed wild environment, generating valuable knowledge about tiger behaviour, habitat use, and ethical big-cat management.
