Wellington Zoo

Wellington Zoo, known as Te Nukuao, is a 13-hectare wildlife sanctuary nestled in Wellington's green belt, home to more than 500 animals across around 80 species. Visitors encounter lions, gibbons, snow leopards, kangaroos, kea in a free-flight habitat, and a wide range of native and international wildlife across themed zones that journey from sea to mountains. The zoo is the world's first Toitu carboNZero certified zoo, achieving carbon-neutral status through strong sustainability commitments. Conservation highlights include the Whitaker's Skink Recovery Programme, caring for around one sixth of the entire surviving population, and Te Kohanga The Nest animal hospital, which has treated over 5,000 native animals.
