Zoologico de Itaipu is a conservation-focused zoo located within the Itaipu Binacional complex in Hernandarias, Paraguay, on the highway connecting Ciudad Presidente Franco and Saltos del Guaira. Founded in 1978 with animals rescued from the area flooded during the construction of the Itaipu Dam, the zoo has grown into an important sanctuary for endangered species. It is the only zoo in Paraguay to house the vinagre fox and also shelters marsh deer, maned wolves, jaguars, pumas, blue-fronted parrots, and other threatened native wildlife. Active captive breeding programs support the conservation of species including jaguars and marsh deer, and the facility plays a vital role in environmental education and the preservation of Paraguay's rich natural heritage.
